The religious undertones were there, but they weren't stifling as I was led to believe by the plot summary that I was given by a friend. Thought-provoking and lyrical in places. Certainly kept my interest and was a quick read.
My wife led me to believe the writing was poor. I think she's wrong. 'Peace like a river' also compares favorably to 'The shack' in its treatment of just about every element of literature: character, plot, voice, etc. Its vision of the afterlife rings truer. The tears I shed at its ending feel earned.
I did finish this book a few weeks ago. I need to blog a review -- at which point I'll post it here.
Hurricane Ike seriously hindered my ability to read. I wouldn't have thought that. Instead of reading every night, I ended up hanging out with friends and neighbors, playing games and whatnot. Fun!
Consequently, I'm a little behind on Peace Like a River.
