Where does the space between letters begin, and where does the space surrounding a letter itself end? Although the areas between the letters are not equal, the word appears evenly spaced. If, however, we replace the concept of area with that of light, everything becomes much simpler, and we can do without confusing concepts such as 'residual letterspace.'

This book is a masterpiece.

If you love design, type (or any kind of craft, really) it is a must read.

I like to think of it as the perfect example of what Pirsig talks about in "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance", and that which programmers call "the Quality without a name".

A truly inspiring book, even if you don't like typography.

A deliciously brief alternative to Robert Bringhurst's classic The Elements of Typographic Style.

Addresses how our eyes scan paragraphs for content and provides many visual examples of various typographic treatments, typefaces, weights, etc.
