"Watchmen", the great meta-comic, might have done great things to advance the medium, but ultimately I felt the characters were a little unsatisfying. Interestingly enough, the character I was most drawn to was Dr. Manhattan, who spends most of the narrative as a very inhuman, disconnected presence. Still... the narrative structure and constant in-references were impressive, and I would definitely recommend it to everybody. I just wish, perhaps somewhat naively, that Moore had gone to slightly further lengths to make the main characters his own rather than analogues for our popular superhero archetypes.
