This book was a very compulsive read. The world of down-and-out English country gentry is very interesting and a world so distant from mine, and Waters is very adept at bringing the personalities and speech of these people to life. She also knows how to build suspense and keep it up just right. I really admired the flow of the narrative, how it went up and down and up and down; but I do feel like it sort of unraveled at the end. There's a big mystery, maybe supernatural/maybe not, and there's no real resolution to it. Not a bad book by any means, but the ending could have been tighter.
