This book is hilarious and insightful. It makes me love the Puritans and kind of hate them at the same time (which is Vowell's intention). David Row got it for me for my birthday and I have yet to finish the last few chapters.
I'm only a few pages into The Wordy Shipmates. I can't tell if I'm intrigued or annoyed. So far, Vowell is doing an excellent job of showing that the Massachusetts Bay Puritans were not unlearned spoilsports (she expressly denies Arthur Miller's picture of that world). But, her rhetoric is a bit much. She herself is too wordy. Hopefully, this was just introduction, and she'll tone it down for the meat.
