I'm pleased to see a novel from the supernatural genre that isn't as smutty as the Anita Blake series. Harrison creates a fascinating world that, although heavy with supernatural cliches, manages to be rich and engaging. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

I read both, and I know what you mean. You are so right! Rachel Morgan feels much more like a real person.

If you're looking for some good characters in a modern fantasy setting without much smut, check out Patricia Brigg's Mercedes Thompson series.

sounds good, thanks for the tip :)

No, but it does deserve a rational critique. Slam it all you like, but at least do it with some well thought out criticism rather than a two word denunciation. It's unproductive to the site, as your inability to clearly state WHY the book is "not good" leaves potential readers unable to determine if they might feel similarly. In addition, it makes you look like an elitist jerk. While most people would be quick to say that Harlequin romance novels, for example, are "not good," it's likely they could at least provide a few reasons as to why they feel that way.

Some people think that "New Spring" could be the new starting point for the series. I disagree. Siuan, Morraine, and Lan are fascinating characters, but the book would be less interesting if the reader did not already know the three intimately. It's best to read this prequel after finishing the series, with the fates (albeit incomplete) of the characters already in mind.

Mind being a little more specific? Or at least a little more forgiving to the work the author has put into writing the book? If it's not your taste, that's one thing, but just denouncing it as "not good" doesn't give much credit to Harris or her readers.

Agreed. This is definitely my favorite book from the series so far. I love Eric and am anxious to see how his relationship with Sookie plays out, both in the books and on "True Blood."

Jennifer added Echo to her library.
