If you're going to see Cats and have grand aspirations of understanding the plot, this is an absolute must read BEFORE going. Certainly you can enjoy the music, costumes, and dancing, but T.S. Eliot's poems along with the fabulous illustrations would have prepared me better to grasp the story behind the many feline personalities.
