There weren't quite as many thrilling naval battles in Post Captain as in Master and Commander, but it was still an enjoyable read, with the relationship between the two main characters being fleshed out nicely. There's also some romantic drama, a good dose of humor, and passing mentions of Brighton and the Royal Pavilion!

Despite the fact that a lot of the nautical stuff in this book went completely over my head, this was a rip-roaring yarn if ever I've read one. The naval battles are thrilling, the depictions of 18th-century life are fascinating, and the friendship between the two main characters is funny, touching and believable. I love tales of seafaring, so this was a delight to read.

As a foodie - and, specifically, an Italian food fanatic - I loved this book. Though it's an unflinching portrait of life in a professional kitchen, it doesn't have the macho swagger that put me off Kitchen Confidential. Instead, it's funny, moving, educational, and inspiring. It made me not just want to eat the delicious food Buford describes, but to cook it myself - not in a professional kitchen, however.
